Additional information

Edward VIII abdicated in December 1936 before any British or Indian coinage bearing his effigy entered official circulation. What does exist are pattern and trial pieces produced in anticipation of a reign that never materialized. This copper piece is almost certainly one such trial — struck at the Calcutta or Bombay mint in preparation for a currency changeover that the abdication rendered obsolete within months of his accession.
