Obverse description Central so-called whip cross, formed by a bold cross with pellets or wedge-shaped terminals at the extremities, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding field bears the partial episcopal legend identifying Bishop Adalrich (Oudalric). The design is characteristic of early medieval German ecclesiastical bracteate-style deniers, executed in a crude but expressive hammered style typical of the Ottonian-Salian period.
