Obverse description A prominent long cross on two steps dominates the field, its vertical and horizontal arms dividing the legend into three textual segments arranged around the cross. The inscription HADRIANVS PAPA, identifying Pope Adrian I, is distributed across the four quadrants formed by the cross arms in characteristic Carolingian denier style. The lettering is rendered in bold, somewhat irregular Roman capitals, reflecting the hand-cut craftsmanship of hammered coinage. The flan is irregular in outline with a plain, undecorated border. The overall composition is purely epigraphic, with no figural imagery.
