Additional information

Baudouin IV became king at eleven years old and was already showing symptoms of leprosy — the disease that would define his reign and eventually kill him at twenty-four. Despite this, he defeated Saladin at the Battle of Montgisard in 1177 with a force reportedly outnumbered several times over, a victory that briefly stabilized the kingdom's eastern frontier. His coinage reflects a reign conducted almost entirely under physical deterioration and regency disputes.

Metcalf's die study places these deniers across a relatively broad sequence, suggesting sustained mint output through the 1170s and early 1180s despite the political turbulence.
