| Obverse description | The obverse displays a bold monogram in the field, composed of the interlaced letters R, F, and P — the royal Carolingian monogram standing for REX FRANCORUM PIPPINUS (Pepin, King of the Franks). The monogram is rendered in the characteristic Carolingian style with angular, interlocking strokes. A cross element is integrated into the lower portion of the design, a common feature of early Carolingian coinage. Two pellets flank the field, serving as decorative stops. The die work is typical of the hammered silver deniers of the mid-eighth century, with irregular flan edges. |
