Obverse description Crude hammered field displaying highly stylised architectural elements, interpreted as schematic towers or turrets arranged symmetrically in the quarters of the die. The design is executed in a primitive, almost abstract manner characteristic of early medieval episcopal coinage. A retrograde or distorted legend reading BHES·AI surrounds or bisects the central motif, rendered in irregular, crudely-formed Latin capital letters. The overall composition reflects the rudimentary die-cutting techniques of mid-eleventh century Rhenish ecclesiastical mints.
