Waifer was the last independent Duke of Aquitaine, fighting a grinding nine-year war against Pepin the Short before being murdered in 768 — almost certainly on Pepin's orders — just as Frankish control was finally consolidated. These deniers were struck across a duchy in active military resistance, which partly explains the inconsistency of surviving specimens and the number of known die variations catalogued under this type.
