| Obverse description | Central field features an arrangement of five six-pointed stars disposed within a plain inner circle, one star at center and four surrounding it. The composition is enclosed by a beaded inner border, beyond which the circular legend reads +CASTELLA. The lettering is rendered in a characteristic Romanesque lapidary style typical of Castilian coinage of the late 12th century. The flan is irregular, as is common for hammered medieval billon issues of this period. |

| Reverse description | A bold Greek cross with equal arms occupies the central field, enclosed within a plain inner circle and beaded border. The cross arms are broad and slightly splayed at the tips, consistent with Romanesque ecclesiastical design. Small decorative elements appear in the four quadrants formed by the cross arms within the inner circle. The surrounding circular legend ANFVS REX is distributed around the outer field in clear Romanesque capitals, identifying the issuing monarch Alfonso VIII as king. |
