Abd al-Rashid's reign began only because his half-brother Mawdud died without a clear succession plan in 1041, touching off nearly a decade of dynastic instability before Abd al-Rashid seized power in 1049. His rule lasted barely two years — he was murdered in 1052 during a coup led by a Turkish slave commander named Toghrul, who briefly installed a puppet before being killed himself. Coins from this reign are correspondingly scarce, products of a mint operating under a ruler whose hold on Ghazna was never secure.
