Reverse description Central field bearing three to four lines of Kufic Arabic inscription in horizontal registers within a linear border, surmounted by a small circular pellet or ornament above the uppermost line of text. The inscriptions name the mint, the regnal year, and acknowledge the Saffarid ruler Ya'qub ibn al-Layth as well as Abbasid suzerainty, in keeping with standard 'Abbasid-format eastern dirhams. The lettering is rendered in crisp angular Kufic script. A circular inner line ring encloses the central epigraphic panel, which is in turn surrounded by a continuous Kufic marginal legend and an outer beaded border typical of hammered silver dirhams of this period.
