Additional information

Sigismund II Augustus ruled the Grand Duchy of Lithuania — and from 1548, the Polish-Lithuanian union — during one of the most politically consequential periods in the region's history, yet he died without a legitimate heir, ending the Jagiellonian dynasty entirely. The Wilno mint operated intermittently under his authority, and these ducats were struck across a span of nearly 25 years, meaning individual pieces vary considerably by die period. Kopicki catalogues five distinct varieties within this type, distinguished primarily by legend punctuation, mintmaster marks, and subtle die differences rather than major design changes.

The 1569 Union of Lublin, signed midway through this coinage's run, formally merged the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy into the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth — yet Lithuanian coinage retained its own identity and mint through the transition.
