Al-Zahir Ghazi, the son of Saladin, ruled Aleppo from 1193 until his death in 1216 — one of the longer and more stable Ayyubid tenures in Syria. His copper fals coinage was produced in quantity for local bazaar transactions, filling the gap that silver dirhams were too valuable to occupy. The ornamented circle type is among several distinct die groupings from his mint, catalogued by Balog as a recognizable series rather than a single emission.
