Additional information

Countermarked copper fals circulated widely across Timurid Central Asia as small-denomination coinage suffered chronic instability — local authorities restruck or overstruck existing pieces rather than mint fresh coin, a cheaper solution to shortages. The Samarqand countermark effectively revalidated earlier fals for continued local use, tying their legitimacy to the city rather than to any ruling sovereign's authority.

The Zeno reference places this squarely in a period when Shahrukh's administration controlled Samarqand, though attribution of individual countermark campaigns to specific years within the 1420–1440 window remains unresolved in the literature.
