Obverse description Central field dominated by a bold Arabic Kufic or Naskh-style inscription arranged in two or more lines, reading al-Malik al-Adil, a royal epithet of the Zengid ruler Nur al-Din Mahmud. Decorative foliate or arabesque ornaments appear above and below the main legend, a characteristic feature of Zengid copper coinage. The flan is irregular and of typical hammered fabric, with the inscription occupying the majority of the field. A partial marginal legend or decorative border runs along the outer edge of the coin, though it is partly off-flan due to the irregular planchet.
