| Obverse description | The nickel-brass core features a heraldic shield bearing the effigy of a polar bear rearing upright to the left, accompanied by a research vessel in the lower portion of the shield, and a crenellated battlement motif at the top. A scroll beneath the shield bears the legend RESEACH AND DISCOVERY (sic). The date 2023 appears in the field below the shield.
