| Obverse description | Celticised rendering of an Apollo head facing right, derived from Macedonian stater prototypes, executed in characteristic Late Iron Age Celtic abstract style. The wreath is stylised with leaves oriented downwards, accompanied by a cloak and crescent ornaments flanking the head. A spike composed of lines and pellets projects from the design, with additional crescents arranged above the head. The overall treatment demonstrates the progressive abstraction typical of southern British coinage of the late first century BC. |

Eppillus ruled the Atrebates following the death of Commios, likely his father, and is one of the very few British Celtic rulers to place his own name on coinage in Latin lettering — a pointed gesture toward Roman cultural alignment at a moment when Augustus was consolidating influence across northwestern Europe. Whether this represents genuine Romanization or calculated political signaling remains debated. The Three Rings reverse type is specific to his early issues and distinguishes this stater from his later Calleva-mint productions, where iconographic choices shift noticeably.
