The mane is depicted with pronounced radiating locks framing the face, and the open jaws reveal the teeth in a snarling expression. Side was one of the most commercially active ports on the Pamphylian coast, and its silver fractions circulated widely through trade networks linking the eastern Mediterranean to the Anatolian interior. The city maintained a remarkably consistent civic coinage through the Hellenistic period despite successive overlords — Ptolemaic, Seleucid, and eventually Roman — largely because its harbor revenues gave local magistrates unusual monetary autonomy.
The Atlan reference range of 121–126 suggests magistrate-controlled die variation, a common Sidetan practice for accountability rather than artistry.
