Dietrich II of Formbach ruled a county whose line was already in terminal decline by the time these coins were struck — the dynasty had suffered catastrophic losses in the Investiture Contest, backing the imperial side against the papacy at enormous political cost. When Dietrich died without male heirs around 1140, the county was absorbed by the Bavarian Wittelsbach sphere, making this issue one of the final artifacts of an independent Formbach coinage. The CNA attribution remains the primary scholarly anchor for this type.
