Additional information

Felix was appointed procurator of Judea by Claudius around 52 AD, an extraordinary posting for a freedman — his brother Pallas held enormous influence at court, which almost certainly explains the appointment. Tacitus was withering on the subject, writing that Felix "practiced every kind of cruelty and lust, wielding the power of a king with all the instincts of a slave." The coins struck under his procuratorship are among the few physical artifacts attributable directly to his administration, issued in the final year of Claudius's reign before Nero's accession rendered the imperial reference obsolete.
