The Native American Mint is a private company, not a U.S. government institution — these pieces carry no legal tender status and are not produced under any tribal mint authority recognized by the Catawba Indian Nation of South Carolina. The Catawba are notable as the only federally recognized tribe in the Carolinas, and their 1993 land settlement with the federal government was among the largest of its kind in the eastern United States.
