Obverse description Central field occupied by a large quartered heraldic shield, party per pale, displaying on the dexter side the arms of Jerusalem (a cross potent between four crosslets) and on the sinister side the arms of Anjou (semé of fleurs-de-lis). The shield is set within a beaded inner circle, surrounded by the Latin royal legend in Gothic lettering. The overall style is characteristic of 13th-century Southern Italian hammered coinage.

Reverse description The Annunciation scene depicted in a devotional Gothic style: the Archangel Gabriel stands to the left, his right hand raised in salutation, facing the Virgin Mary who stands to the right in a posture of humble reception. Between the two figures, at center, a lily in a pot symbolizing the Virgin's purity and the Annunciation. The figures are rendered in low relief within a beaded inner circle, and the surrounding field carries the Ave Maria inscription in Latin Gothic lettering.
