Obverse description Archaic spoked wheel with four crossbars radiating from a central hub, rendered in a primitive, schematic style characteristic of early Etruscan coinage. The wheel design fills the central field and is enclosed within a roughly circular incuse border. The execution reflects the archaic artistic conventions of the Populonian mint during the fourth century BC.

Additional information

Populonia, an Etruscan city on the Tyrrhenian coast of northern Italy, was unusual among ancient minting authorities in striking silver coinage at unusually low denominations — most Etruscan mints favored bronze. The archaic wheel series is among the earliest issues attributed to this mint, and the marked value on this piece reflects a monetary sophistication that predates Rome's own silver coinage by roughly a century.
