Obverse description Hammered gold flan of irregular round shape bearing multiple lines of Arabic calligraphic legend enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The inscription names the sultan and records the mint and Hijri date, reading: Sultan Mahmud bin Mustafa, may he be victorious, struck in Tripoli West, AH 1143. The script is rendered in an ornate, densely packed Ottoman hand characteristic of provincial Maghrebi mint production of the early 18th century.
