| Obverse description | Tughra-style multi-line Arabic inscription filling the field, presenting the sultan's name and titles in bold calligraphic script. The legend reads 'Sultan Mahmud Khan, may he be victorious' in the upper registers, with the mint name 'Tripoli West' and the AH regnal year 1223 inscribed in the lower portion. The entire design is framed by an irregular, slightly flan-edged border typical of hammered Ottoman gold coinage. There is no figurative imagery; the composition relies entirely on the decorative quality of the Arabic calligraphy. The strike shows characteristic unevenness associated with provincial hammered production. |
