Reverse description A lion advancing to right in a vigorous, naturalistic stride, rendered in the archaic-Hellenistic tradition of Massalian coinage. The mane is indicated by short incised lines, and the musculature of the haunches is well articulated. Above the lion, in the upper field, the Greek legend ΜΑΣΣΑ is disposed in two lines; below, in the exergue, the secondary inscription ΕΕ appears within a rectangular compartment or tablet, serving as a magistrate's or mint-control mark.
