| Obverse description | Facing bust of King Erwig in the centre of the field, depicted in a highly stylised and schematic manner characteristic of late Visigothic coinage, wearing a crown and draped shoulders. The portrait is rendered in bold, if crude, relief with an abstract quality typical of seventh-century Iberian goldsmith work. Surrounding the bust is a beaded inner border, beyond which runs the circular Latin legend. The legend reads + I D I N M ERVIGIVS P, identifying the king by name with the epithet Pius. |
