| Obverse description | Diademed and draped bust of Emperor Justinian I facing right, wearing a helmet or diadem with elaborate decoration and a cuirass adorned with a beaded necklace terminating in a cross pendant at the chest. The portrait is rendered in the debased Visigothic interpretation of Byzantine imperial iconography, with angular, stylized features characteristic of early medieval Germanic die-cutting.
