Recaredo I converted from Arianism to Nicene Christianity in 587, a decision formalized at the Third Council of Toledo in 589 — one of the more consequential religious realignments in post-Roman Iberian history. Toledo mint production under his reign reflects the administrative consolidation that followed, with the city functioning as the primary royal mint. The CNV and Pliego references place this piece within a well-documented but numerically small series; surviving Visigothic tremisses of any reign are scarce relative to contemporary Byzantine issues, as gold rarely returned to the mint once in circulation.
