Obverse description Facing bust of King Sisenand rendered in the debased late-antique Visigothic style, depicted with a broad schematic face, large eyes, and long hanging braided or beaded hair falling to either side of the neck. The king wears a jewelled collar or torque at the base of the bust, and a diadem or crown is suggested by the arc above the head. Flanking the bust and filling the field are highly stylised, angular letters forming the retrograde or degenerate Latin legend SISENANDVS RE, arranged around the central effigy in the manner typical of Visigothic tremisses. The entire design is bordered by a beaded or pellet inner circle and an irregular hammered rim.
