Harmonie Vooruit was a socialist cultural society in Ghent, and like many Belgian mutual associations and cooperatives of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, it issued its own internal scrip to circulate among members — redeemable at society-affiliated shops, canteens, or events rather than at any bank. These tokens of account existed entirely outside the formal monetary system and were legally tolerated as long as they stayed within the issuing community.

The unusually square proportions of this note are a practical consequence of small private print runs, where economy of paper stock and simplicity of layout took precedence over convention.
