Reverse description Athena advancing to the right, depicted in full figure wearing a long chiton and a crested Attic helmet; she carries a large round shield on her left arm and brandishes a spear in her raised right hand. The warrior goddess is portrayed in a dynamic martial posture, consistent with the standard Hellenistic civic type employed by Phokian mints. The style reflects competent provincial die-cutting of the second century BC.

Additional information

Elateia was the largest city in Phokis and guarded the principal route through the Kephisos valley into central Greece — a strategic position that made it repeatedly contested during the Macedonian Wars. This issue falls squarely within the period following the Roman defeat of Philip V at Kynoskephalai in 197 BC, when Phokian cities regained autonomy under Roman patronage but operated in a politically unstable vacuum. Local bronze coinage of this type likely served immediate regional exchange needs as the district reorganized under the new order Flamininus had imposed on Greece.
