Opmerkingen

Madagascar's wartime fractional notes of 1916 were emergency substitutes for small-denomination coinage, which had effectively disappeared from circulation as metal was diverted to the French war effort. The 0,05 Franc — the smallest in this emergency series — was a direct consequence of the coin shortage that hit French colonial territories across the board during World War I.

These notes were printed locally under austere conditions, and the paper quality reflects it. Surviving examples frequently show brittleness and foxing that is structural, not the result of handling.
