The zero-euro souvenir note was introduced by Ulysse Euro Collector in 2015 as a legal-tender-adjacent collectible — technically face value zero, but sold at a retail premium to tourists. The format exploits a genuine European Central Bank provision that member states may issue legal tender banknotes of any denomination, including zero, though these were never intended for actual exchange. Oberthur Fiduciaire in Rennes, one of Europe's most active security printers, produced the series with the same anti-counterfeiting specifications applied to circulating euro notes — UV-reactive inks, security thread, microprinting — which is the entire point of the collector pitch.

The Arles series was among the earliest UECL releases, coinciding with the launch year of the concept itself.
