Imrich Karvaš served as governor of the National Bank of Slovakia during the wartime Slovak State, walking an increasingly precarious line between nominal cooperation with the Nazi-aligned government and quiet obstruction of its economic demands. He was arrested by the Gestapo in 1944 following the Slovak National Uprising and deported to a concentration camp — an unusual fate for a central banker, and a measure of how seriously the Germans took his interference.
The zero-euro souvenir format, administered under ESNA licensing and printed by Oberthur Fiduciaire, carries legal tender status in EU law despite having no assigned circulation value — a technicality that gives these collector issues their formal standing.
