The souvenir euro program was launched in 2015 by the Eurosouvenirs association as a licensed tourist collectible — zero face value, legal tender nowhere, but printed on genuine cotton substrate by Oberthur Fiduciaire using actual banknote security features. The decision to use UV ink and microprinting on a novelty item was deliberate: the notes had to be visually and tactilely convincing to justify the retail price point at tourist sites across France and beyond.
La Dune du Pilat, at roughly 110 meters above sea level when this note was issued, is the tallest sand dune in Europe — a geological formation that migrates several meters inland each year, slowly consuming the pine forest behind it.
