Memo Euro notes are a Dutch commercial souvenir series, not legal tender, issued by the private firm Memo Euro Scope specifically for the tourist trade. The Zaanse Schans variant targets one of the Netherlands' most visited open-air museum sites, a reconstructed 18th-century village on the Zaan river north of Amsterdam. These notes circulate informally as keepsakes and change hands at gift shops rather than banks.
The inclusion of a watermark on a souvenir item is a deliberate nod to authenticity — or at least the appearance of it — and likely discouraged cheap counterfeiting of an already valueless piece.
