Hell bank notes are not currency in any monetary sense — they are votive offerings burned at Chinese funerary rites so that the deceased may have spending money in the afterlife. The practice blends older traditions of burning paper effigies with a distinctly modern aesthetic borrowed from legal tender. "Heaven and Earth Bank" is a conventional fictitious issuer name appearing on countless versions; no such institution exists or is intended to exist.
Not a collectable in the numismatic sense, though they circulate freely among Western collectors unfamiliar with the distinction. The paper is typically lightweight and uncoated, designed to burn cleanly.
