The Company of Merchants Trading to Africa was a loose association of British traders granted a monopoly over the Gold Coast forts in 1750, replacing the dissolved Royal African Company. The Ackey series was intended as a trade currency for transactions along the West African coast, where Spanish, Portuguese, and locally accepted currencies created a chaotic exchange environment. Trial strikes like this piece were produced ahead of a proposed coinage run, submitted for approval before full production was authorized — a standard assay process of the period that frequently resulted in pieces never advancing to circulation.
KM#Pn5 and Pn6 designations indicate two distinct trial varieties exist for this denomination, likely differing in die alignment or edge treatment.
