Obverse description Red-brown intaglio print on a guilloche underprint. A portrait vignette of King Ghazi I in military uniform occupies the right portion of the note, with an oval blank panel to the left likely intended for a watermark. Arabic inscriptions appear in a central panel at top and at centre, with the denomination in Arabic script below, and the serial number printed twice in black at upper right and lower left.

Iraq's first national banknotes — this series included — were issued under the Currency Law of 1931, when the newly independent kingdom needed a monetary institution not controlled by the British-run board that had previously managed currency through the India-linked rupee system. The Iraqi dinar was pegged to sterling at one dinar to one pound, a rate that held until 1949.

Bradbury Wilkinson produced the entire series at their New Malden works. The half-dinar is the lowest denomination of the set and consequently saw the heaviest use, making genuinely uncirculated examples harder to locate than the higher values.
