| Obverse description | Red-brown intaglio print on a guilloche underprint. Iraq's first national banknotes — this series included — were issued under the Currency Law of 1931, when the newly independent kingdom needed a monetary institution not controlled by the British-run board that had previously managed currency through the India-linked rupee system. The Iraqi dinar was pegged to sterling at one dinar to one pound, a rate that held until 1949.
Bradbury Wilkinson produced the entire series at their New Malden works. The half-dinar is the lowest denomination of the set and consequently saw the heaviest use, making genuinely uncirculated examples harder to locate than the higher values.
