Bahrain's Currency Board was established in 1964 specifically to replace the Indian rupee, which had circulated on the island under the Gulf Rupee arrangement. When India devalued the Gulf Rupee in June 1966, Bahrain's decision to issue its own currency two years earlier proved fortuitous — the dinar series, already in circulation, insulated the country entirely from that devaluation shock.

De La Rue printed the full 1964 series, their relationship with Gulf states being well established by this point. The half-dinar denomination saw heavy everyday use and worn examples vastly outnumber uncirculated ones in the market.
