Jordan's 1980 coinage program coincided with a broader regional realignment following the Camp David Accords, which had isolated Egypt and reshuffled economic relationships across the Arab world. The Jordanian dinar had been formally pegged to the IMF's Special Drawing Right since 1975, giving the Central Bank unusual monetary stability relative to its neighbors — which partly explains the unhurried, methodical pace of Hashemite coinage updates through this period.

The "Hijra" designation marks the date in the Islamic calendar, AH 1400 — a centennial year of considerable symbolic weight across the Muslim world.
