Obverse description Central field bears the crowned Portuguese royal coat of arms, featuring the traditional escutcheon with the five quinas and the bordure of castles, surmounted by an elaborate royal crown. The shield is rendered in bold relief with clear heraldic detail. A circular Latin legend surrounds the arms, reading JOSEPHUS·I·D·G REX·P·ET·D·GUINEÆ, proclaiming King José I by the grace of God, King of Portugal and Lord of Guinea. The legend is set close to the rim without an additional border, giving the design a characteristic colonial baroque character.
