Nova Scotia's colonial coinage in this period was driven almost entirely by the chronic shortage of small change — British regal copper rarely made it across the Atlantic in sufficient quantities, and American coins filled gaps unofficially. The 1832 issue was authorized by the Nova Scotia legislature and struck in Birmingham, part of a broader colonial practice of contracting private British minters to supply what the imperial system wouldn't.

Breton 871 is the standard attribution for this type, cross-referenced in the Charlton Colonial Token catalogue as NS-1D. Striking quality varies noticeably across surviving examples, a common outcome when colonial contracts prioritized volume over precision.
