Cyprus came under British administration in 1878 and was formally annexed as a Crown Colony in 1914, the same week Britain declared war on the Ottoman Empire. By the 1942–1945 period, wartime metal shortages had already forced compositional changes across British colonial coinage globally, and this bronze alloy reflects those constraints — the tin content reduced to a fraction of pre-war specifications.

George VI's colonial issues from this period are notable for being struck while the king's health was already in serious decline, complicated by years of wartime stress. Cyprus itself housed significant RAF staging operations throughout the Mediterranean campaign.
