Proclamation pieces like this were struck not for commerce but for ceremony — scattered among crowds or presented to dignitaries during the formal acclamation of a new monarch in colonial capitals. Carlos III had already been king of Naples and Sicily for over two decades before inheriting the Spanish crown in 1759, arriving as an unusually experienced ruler by Bourbon standards. Guatemala City's proclamation issue the following year was among the more remote colonial observances of his accession, produced far from the metropolitan mints of Mexico City or Lima.
Medina's cataloguing of these Hispanic proclamation pieces remains the foundational reference, though attribution between genuine struck examples and later restrike issues requires careful attention to die alignment.
