The 1732 Mexico City Mint pattern marks the transition point between the old macuquina (cob) coinage and the newly mandated milled coinage ordered by Felipe V. The Royal Decree requiring uniformly struck, milled coins for all Spanish colonial mints came in 1728, but implementation lagged — Mexico City's first official milled reales entered circulation in 1732, making this pattern a direct product of that administrative pressure.
The half real denomination was the smallest silver coin in regular colonial production, and patterns at this size are considerably scarcer than those of the larger denominations tested during the same transition period.
