Luis I reigned for just seven months before dying of smallpox in August 1724, making his coinage among the briefest of any Spanish monarch. The Mexico City mint was already producing his issues when he died, and many coins struck in his name continued circulating alongside those of his father Philip V, who resumed the throne. The KM#R25 designation covers the cob-style macuqueña fabric — hand-cut, irregularly shaped planchets that were the norm for New World silver before milled coinage fully displaced them in the 1730s.
