De Javasche Bank's postwar fractional notes occupy an awkward historical position. By 1948, Dutch authority over the Indonesian archipelago was already collapsing — the Renville Agreement had been signed in January that year under UN pressure, and the Republic of Indonesia had been issuing its own currency since 1946. Notes from De Javasche Bank continued to circulate in Dutch-controlled territories, but their geographic reach was shrinking with each month of the independence struggle.

The dual denomination — roepiah and cent — reflects the transitional monetary arithmetic of the period, bridging the colonial and republican nomenclatures simultaneously.
