Ropi is a local complementary currency launched in 2015 by a citizen network in the Namur region of Belgium, part of the broader wave of community currencies that spread across francophone Belgium in the 2010s following the example of the Valeureux in Liège. Acceptance is restricted to participating merchants within a defined geographic zone — the currency is explicitly non-convertible back to euros once exchanged, a deliberate friction designed to keep spending local.
The QR code links to a verification system, an unusually tech-forward feature for a grassroots paper currency of this denomination.
