Obverse description Central device consisting of a rayed sun with a plain disc at its centre, surmounted by an imperial crown. Two ornate scrolling ribbons flank the sun, bearing the motto LIGHT AND LIBERTY, with a third ribbon below inscribed AND, together forming the company's heraldic emblem. The mint mark H appears below the central device. The circular legend IMPERIAL BRITISH EAST AFRICA COMPANY surrounds the design, separated by a raised dot stop, all within a toothed border.

The date 1890 appears in the exergue below the wreath. The legend MOMBASA arcs across the upper field outside the wreath, within a toothed border.
